Ain't Technology Great!

bbqHere I am, sitting in the awning of a caravan taking a few days break. It's difficult running a business where I really need to be in contact with people and have access to certain things all the time but we all need to charge our batteries.  The only way I can relax is by knowing what's happening and being able to react if necessary.

So, as I said, I'm sitting here relaxing.  I have a laptop that's no bigger than an A4 pad.  Plugged into it is a device that's no bigger than a cigarette lighter. From here I can connect at speeds that are fast enough to watch TV programmes on BBC iPlayer, I can download e-mails and I can connect to to the servers we run to sort out any problems. I've already sorted out several problems for clients, a feat that would have been impossible a short time ago. I've also manage to carry on working on projects that would have stalled until I came back.

But... there's a big paradox here. I'm right up to date with technology and have the very latest tools to be able to do my job. However, as the picture shows, the greatest pleasure is still messing with one of man's oldest accomplishments: the ability to make fire and cook.

As I looked out this evening on my fellow caravanners and campers, the scene was like one of those post apocalyptic city-scapes that you see in the big films with plumes of smoke like so many burning buildings on a nuclear landscape, each one a symbol of one of our most basic instincts. My desire for man's red fire is a common one. Sometimes, even with the greatest technology at our finger tips, we're still cavemen at heart!

On your marks...

I know this is jumping the gun but this week will see the launch of one of the best projects that I've been involved in.

Why was it good?

  1. The client had a proper budget which meant that we could give them exactly what they wanted and allow for changes.  Yes, it means we ate into our profit a little but the costs were covered, the client is happy and it's been a very satisfying piece of work
  2. The client was comfortable with the fact that he's paying us because we know what we're doing and has left us to come up with something that we know will work
  3. The client has been ultra efficient in providing clear and concise instructions when it comes to content and then feedback when we've needed it
  4. We've learned an enormous amount

What does the site do?

The site is the UK version of a site for a large multi-national and, in very brief terms, encompasses the following:

  • Brand guidelines adhered to with a fantastic design
  • E-commerce
  • Download management
  • Integration of forms into SalesForce.com
  • News
  • Mega Menu
  • Full content management system
  • 150 pages of content

I want all our projects like this.  It's been a huge challenge and a big undertaking to turn out a project like this.  We started it at the beginning of July and it should go live this week.  So that's 7 weeks from start to finish.  This is where we excel.  When clients are totally serious about their website, we step up to the plate and will meet or exceed their expectations.

For now, the site will have to remain under wraps but please check back and I'll post again when it goes live.
